DCOA, Abilene business invest in new expansion project

The Funeral Directors Life Insurance Company received approval from the Abilene City Council to expand its building, which will create more jobs in the community with the help of the Development Corporation of Abilene.

The Development Corporation of Abilene (DCOA) works with many businesses in Abilene to help create more jobs in the community.

Right now, the DCOA is working with the Funeral Directors Life Insurance Company to create more than 70 new jobs in the next five years, on top of the more than 160 employees that they have now, who have average salaries of about $55,000.

"The company was founded in Brady, Texas in 1981. We moved here in 1986 with four employees,” said Addison Templeton, COO of the Funeral Directors Life Insurance Company.

Now, the company has over 176 employees and will grow over the next few years.

The DCOA is helping the Funeral Directors Life Insurance Company with a $1 million incentive and the company itself will spend around $6 million to complete the project.

The company is expanding its 50,000 sq. ft. building by an additional 30,000 sq. ft., which is located south of Abilene Regional Medical Center.

The building expansion project will include more office space, covered parking and a courtyard.

"In this expansion, we'll be housing our IT department, which is obviously growing tremendously now. Technology is not going anywhere, so we are going to be adding jobs there. We also acquired a software company in 2013 that's rapidly expanding and provides funeral administrative software all over the U.S.," Templeton said.

Construction will begin as soon as possible and is expected to be completed by 2020.
