BEAUMONT (KFDM) – Plans are underway for a protest outside the federal prison in Beaumont. The demonstration is scheduled for Sunday, July 26.
People with loved ones in the facility are voicing their concerns about the conditions inside the complex during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Among those who are worried is Cheryl Thomas. Thomas lives in the Dallas area, but her son is in the federal unit in Beaumont.
She says he does not have Covid, but he's housed with prisoners who do. She says positive cases are not isolated from the rest of the prison population.
Thomas also tells us her son's release has been delayed because of Covid.
Concerned family members say they will demonstrate outside the prison complex.
In a statement released earlier this month, prison administrators said they have expanded testing and temperature checks.
They claim inmates who have tested positive are exhibiting mild to no symptoms at all.
The prison says it maintains 24-hour, on-call medical staff, and has an ample supply of personal protective equipment.
