New details emerged Tuesday in the murder of a 24-year-old man who was found in an apartment complex last month.

An investigation was launched when the family of Mario Martinez reported him missing since Dec. 6.

On Dec. 20, property management reported a foul odor coming from one of the apartment units at the Astoria Apartment Homes located in the 9300 block of Perrin Beitel Road. When they entered the apartment, a body with multiple gunshot wounds was found rolled in a tarp. Officers were called to the scene immediately.

Further investigation led officers to a former roommate of 47-year-old Reid Shizuo Kamitono. The unidentified person said Kamitono had called him about the crime and asked for help in removing the body from his apartment. The person refused.

Kamitono was arrested and charged with tampering with evidence-concealing a corpse.

A prayer vigil for Martinez was scheduled the same day his body was found but was cancelled when his family was told about the discovery.

"I'm living a nightmare right now because he's a huge part in this family," said Clayla McHenry, Martinez's girlfriend said that day.
