A man drowned on Sunday afternoon while he was swimming with two of his friends near the Ben Ficklin Dam in San Angelo.

Just after 4 p.m. on Sunday, The San Angelo Police Department and the San Angelo Fire Department responded to a report of a person who had supposedly drowned at a recreational area near the Ben Ficklin Reservoir in San Angelo and staged their emergency response efforts on the 4700 block of Ben Ficklin Road.

According to police, a group of three friends had been swimming in the water across from the Ben Ficklin Dam and while in the process of swimming across the water, the group of friends decided that they had swam too far out into the water to be in a safe situation.

When two of the friends in the group took a look behind themselves, they saw that their other friend was lying face down in the water.

Multiple bystanders helped the two friends bring their remaining friend back to shore and were met by paramedics as soon as they made it back to the shore.

Despite the valiant efforts of both the two friends and the multiple bystanders who assisted them with bringing their other friend back to shore, the third friend in the group died right on the shore.

The person who drowned, who has not yet been named, was a 21-year-old male.

The victim's next-of-kin have not been notified of his death as of 6 p.m. on Sunday.

The victim's official cause and manner of death are pending autopsy results.

KTXS News will have more information on this developing story once more details become available.
