ABILENE, Texas — A historic winter storm impacted the entire state of Texas for over a week. Numerous records have been broken in our area as the very cold Arctic air moved into our region.
Here's a look at some of the records that were broken:
In Abilene temperatures fell to freezing at 1 a.m. Tuesday, February 9. Temperatures did not rise above freezing until Friday, February 19.
Through 1 p.m. Friday, February 19 temperatures remained at or below freezing in Abilene. That makes 252 consecutive hours of at or below freezing temperatures.
That's 10 days in a row of below freezing temperatures.
The National Weather Service in San Angelo says the previous record for consecutive hours with temperatures at or below freezing for Abilene was 202 hours, about 7 days in a row.
This occurred between 3 a.m. December 15, 1983 and 1 p.m. December 26, 1983.
Here's a look at high temperatures recorded in Abilene for the month of February through the 19.
San Angelo has tied their previous six day stretch of below freezing temperatures, but broke the number of consecutive hours below freezing.
Temperatures fell at or below freezing at around 5 p.m. Wednesday, February 10. Temperatures remained at or below freezing until midnight Wednesday, February 17.
That makes 152 consecutive hours of at or below freezing temperatures in San Angelo.
The National Weather Service in San Angelo says the previous record for consecutive hours with temperatures at or below freezing for San Angelo was 144 hours.
This occurred back on January 25, 1951 to January 29, 1951.
This winter storm also brought us an all-time record amount of snowfall. A heavy, steady snow fell for most of the day Valentine's Day Sunday.
The National Weather Service reported both Abilene and San Angelo saw record breaking snowfall on Sunday, February 14.
Abilene received 14.8 inches of snow. This shatters the old record of 2.5 inches that fell in 1951.
San Angelo received 10.1 inches of snow. This also breaks the old record of 1.1 inches that fell back in 1951.
In fact, the snow that fell in our area on Sunday, is now the highest snowfall ever recorded in a single day.
In Abilene, that 14.8 inches crushes the old record maximum snowfall. The old record was 9.3 inches set back on April 5, 1996.
San Angelo also broke the same record. That 10.1 is an all-time maximum. The old record was 10.0 inches set back on January 16, 1919.
The Arctic air continued to filter into our area Sunday bringing new record low temperatures for the date.
The low in Abilene on Sunday has been 5 degrees which ties the record low temperature for February 14. The record was set back in 1895.
The high temperature in Abilene was only 22, but that did not beat the coldest high temperature record of 18 set in 1895.
The high temperature in San Angelo was also 22 degrees, but this is a new coldest high temperature record February 14, breaking the old record of 27 degrees set back in 1951.
The low temperature in San Angelo got down to 8 degrees Sunday, which shatters the old record of 19 set back in 1951.
And the record breaking cold continued into Monday.
Late Monday evening, Abilene saw the temperature drop to -2 degrees. This broke the previous record low of 0 degrees set back in 1895.
The -2 degrees ties for 10th coldest temperature ever recorded in Abilene.
Abilene also has a new coldest high temperature record for February 15. Abilene's high only reached 13, breaking the old record of 15 set back in 1895.
Monday morning San Angelo saw record breaking low temperatures once again. San Angelo has dropped down to -1. This shattered the old record of 16 set back in 1909.
As San Angelo dropped to one below zero Monday morning, this ties for the second coldest temperature ever recorded in the city. The last time San Angelo saw -1 was back in 1983 and 1985.
The all-time record low for San Angelo is -4 degrees set back in 1989.
San Angelo saw the coldest high temperature recorded for February 15. The record they broke was is 38 set back in 2007. The high on Monday was 18 for San Angelo.
More records were broken Tuesday.
In Abilene, the temperature dropped to -4 degrees before sunrise Tuesday morning.
While extremely cold, this only ties the record low temperature for February 16. The previous time this occurred on this date was in 1895.
The -4 degree reading in Abilene ties for the 7th coldest temperature ever recorded.
The coldest temperature for the month of February in Abilene is -7 back in 1985. Temperature records go back to September of 1885.
The all-time coldest record low in Abilene is -9, which was recorded on January 4, 1947.
The high temperature in Abilene Tuesday only warmed to 23 degrees. But this did not break the current record for coldest high temperature for the date of 21 degrees.
San Angelo dropped down to -1 Tuesday morning. This crushes the old record low of 16 set back in 2007.
For the second day in a row, San Angelo has tied for the coldest temperature on record for the month of February.
The coldest temperature ever recorded in the City of San Angelo is -4, which was set back on December 23, 1989.
The high temperature Tuesday in San Angelo only reached 31 degrees. This is a new coldest high temperature for the date - breaking the previous record of 35 degrees.
Another record was broken Wednesday.
The high temperature Wednesday, February 17 in Abilene was only 21 degrees. This is the coldest high temperature ever recorded for the date. The previous record was 26 degrees.
Thursday records:
The high temperature in Abilene was 25 degrees Thursday, February 18. This is a new coldest high temperature record for the date. The previous record was 31 degrees.
The high temperature in San Angelo only climbed to 26 degrees. This is a new coldest high temperature for February 18. The previous record was 30 degrees.
A trace of snow was recorded in San Angelo which breaks the old record for the date of zero snow.
Friday morning, February 19, we saw two new record low temperatures.
Abilene dropped down to 5, which crushes the old record of 19 set back in 2006.
San Angelo also saw recording breaking low temperatures. The new record low is 8. The old record was 13 set back in 1936.
