One man dead after explosion in Jones County oil field

JONES COUNTY, Texas — One man is dead after an explosion in a Jones County oil field.

According to the Jones County Sheriff's Office, Jorge Martinez was killed Saturday in the blast at a Sojourner Drilling Corporation oil field on FM 1812/2660.

The sheriff's office said Martinez was helping power washing a heater unit on a battery tank so crews could repair a leak.

Something caused an explosion and knocked Martinez back several feet into a vehicle.

He sustained burns to 60-percent of his body and severe lacerations.

Martinez was airlifted to Hendrick Medical Center and then transferred to Lubbock where he later died.
