Some apartments to charge extra fee on top of street maintenance fee
ABILENE, Texas —
The monthly street maintenance fee will start showing up on all Abilene water bills beginning Jan 1.
But if you live in an apartment, you could be charged an additional fee.
Here is what the city will charge:
- Residents - $6.75/ month
- Apartment complexes - $6 per unit
- Businesses - $25 to $75
However, that is not the case for tenants who live at Lexington Court Apartments and Residence at Heritage Park.
Weidner Apartment Homes, the company that owns both complexes, is charging tenants an extra $3 on top of the $6 street maintenance fee.
This means tenants will pay $108 a year instead of $72 a year.
"I called the office and they told me that it was an admin fee that the management company is charging to process the $6 fee," tenant Valerie Harrison said. "I don't think it's fair. I think it's a way of raising rent, without raising the rent."
When we called the office, we got the same response, however they did not send a statement.
Harrison doesn't understand why her apartment complex is charging an additional fee when the payment goes on everyone's water bill.
"The thing is, my water bill is already a part of my rent so there shouldn't be an admin fee because they already do that. The $6 is being added to my water bill," Harrison said.
Harrison stated that she preferred to write a $9 check to the city, rather than pay a $3 admin fee to her apartment complex.
