ABILENE, Texas — Spring break travelers received a big surprise in Abilene as they noticed gas prices were significantly cheaper compared to other places.
Elias Mateo welcomed the lower prices at the pump with open arms on his cross-country trip to Austin, Texas from Oregon.
“Gas prices are definitely different compared to Oregon,” Mateo said.
Mateo paid gas prices as high as $5 per gallon in Oregon. He filled up his tank for a fraction of what he would’ve paid in Oregon.
“Usually, it would come out to $65, and then I came out here, I filled up for like $40,” Mateo said. “I definitely saw like a $20 difference in my pocket which helped me out right now.”
Alisha Holguin also saved big while topping off her tank on her trip from Odessa to Fort Worth. In Odessa, Texas gas prices are $2.99 in comparison to gas being $2.84 here in Abilene.
“In Odessa it Is more expensive and closer to $100 to fill up,” Holguin said.
Abilene owes its attractive gas prices to cheaper oil in the area.
