An accident in San Angelo has left two teenagers dead and one Angelo State University student in jail.

According to police, around 6 a.m. Thursday an officer was attempting to stop a gray Chevy Equinox traveling south on S. Bryant going 10 miles per hour over the speed limit.

The officer attempted to catch the SUV, but it sped up, ran a red light at Avenue N and collided with another car.

That second car was later identified as an Explorer Sport Trac. Police said it fled the scene.

After an investigation and a citywide alert asking residents to be on the lookout for a 2001-2005 Ford Escape Sport or Sport Trac, the driver of that second vehicle was identified as 24-year-old Benjamin Elder, an Angelo State University student.

He has been charged with accident involving death.

The 17-year-old driver of the Equinox was ejected from the car and taken to the hospital.

Two of the four passengers in that car died. The other two are being treated for injuries.

Elder is being held in the Tom Green County Jail.

Angelo State University released this statement saying, "We are aware of Mr. Elder’s arrest, but we do not have additional information. As well, we would not be able to comment on a pending investigation.”
