Family of slain Lake Brownwood woman holds candlelight vigil as they await killer's trial

The family of Chantay Blankinship held a candlelight vigil over the weekend to honor her life, two years after her death.

Blankinship, 25, was sexually assaulted and murdered by 21-year-old Ryan Riggs in May of 2016, according to the Brown County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators found Blankinship's body less than five miles away from her Lake Brownwood home and both Blankinship and Riggs were neighbors at one point.

The vigil took place at Brownwood's Coggin Park on the second Saturday of May to coincide with when investigators believe that Blankinship was killed.

Several people showed up to the candlelight vigil, including the lead investigator in the murder case, Sgt. Scott Bird of the Brown County Sheriff's Office.

Riggs remains in the Brown County Jail on capital murder charges and is being held there without bond.

Riggs' trial date has not been set yet.
