Suspected San Antonio thief killed while stealing car jack, police chief says
SAN ANTONIO —
A suspected thief was killed during a violent confrontation with a homeowner on the South Side on Tuesday morning.
According to San Antonio Police Chief William McManus, the homeowner found a man trying to steal a jack from under his car parked outside his home on Jennings Avenue at about 6:30 a.m.
McManus says the suspect got the jack into his car and tried to drive away, but the homeowner grabbed onto the car and fired a couple shots from his own gun, possibly striking the suspect.
The suspect's car crashed into the front yard of a home one block over, where he died. The chief said the medical examiner would have to determine whether the suspect died as a result of the shooting or the crash.
McManus said it's likely the homeowner, described as a man in his 40s, would not face charges. He added that the homeowner works as a mechanic and he uses his tools as a way to make a living.
The suspect who died has not been identified. He was described as a man in his 20s.
