Is it the flu or an adenovirus?
SAN ANTONIO- With the flu already hitting hard, doctors say there's another virus getting people sick too. It's called the Adenovirus and unlike the flu, it can have you feeling sick just about anytime throughout the year.
“Adenovirus usually comes on sporadically and all times of the year and flu is truly seasonal,” said Dr. Dina Tom Pediatrician at University Hospital and Assistant Professor at UT Health San Antonio.
Symptoms like a runny nose, coughing, fever and sore throat are similar to the flu but the biggest symptom associated with the adenovirus is conjunctivitis.
Dr. Tom says adenovirus symptoms aren't as severe as the flu.
“Adenovirus, the symptoms kind of tend to come on gradually. With the flu, it's like the first day you know you have the flu,” Dr, Tom said.
Right now, there isn't a vaccine for the virus available to the general public. If you happen to get sick, there's no treatment other than getting some rest and drinking a lot of fluids.
Experts recommend to wash your hands often and try not to touch your eyes, nose or mouth.
