UPDATE: Both east and westbound lanes are now open.

Abilene police are investigating a major truck crash that took place this morning on I-20.

According to police, first responders attended to the crash on I-20 near mile marker 286, close to the FM 600 overpass. An 18 wheeler was heading east and hit the overpass, when it swerved into the median and burst into flames.

The tractor trailer and cab were both engulfed when responders arrived. Two people were inside the cab at the moment of impact and neither were able to escape. Both perished in the fire. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Police are diverting traffic from the area, which has caused a major backup. Texas DPS has closed the interstate and bridge for public safety due to the amount of debris. It will remain closed until officials deem it safe for travel. The trailer was not carrying any dangerous chemicals, and the occupants identities have yet to be released.

The incident is still under investigation, KTXS will continue to keep you updated as more information is released.
