ACU soccer leads Southland with 4 players on preseason all-conference teams
The Abilene Christian Wildcats had four total players on the 2018 Soccer Preseason All-Southland Conference Teams, announced by the conference on Wednesday.
ACU, Houston Baptist and Lamar each had four selections.
Three Wildcats were named to the first team, including returning all-conference players Dylan Owens and Christina Arteaga. Junior midfielder Shay Johnson was also voted to the first team.
Defender Michelle Mulroony was named to the second team.
ACU opens the season at Baylor on Thursday, Aug. 16, and plays its first home match on Sunday, Aug. 19 at 7 p.m. against UTEP.
The Wildcats finished the 2017 season with an 8-10-2 overall record, and a 6-5 mark in the Southland. ACU lost to Stephen F. Austin in penalty kicks in the semifinals of the conference tournament.
Returning players from the 2017 All-Conference First and Second teams are automatically named to the 2018 Preseason All-Conference teams at their same positions. Second team players are elevated to first team if the first team slot is vacated by a non-returning player at their same position. Vacant positions are nominated and voted upon by the conference’s head coaches. Voting for one’s own player is not permitted.
