ACU's Whitley, Gates earn NFL mini-camp invitations
ABILENE, Texas —
After a flurry of activity on NFL Draft weekend that included the selection of Stamford native James Washington (60th overall to Pittsburgh) and the un-drafted signing of former Brownwood kicker Matt McCrane, the ACU Wildcats learned of two of its own given a shot at their NFL dreams.
Wildcat wide receiver Carl Whitley and outside linebacker Bryson Gates both earned mini-camp invitations over the weekend. Whitley will head to New Orleans with the Saints, while Gates will audition with the Oakland Raiders.
This is the first step into making an NFL roster should you not be drafted, nor sign a deal as an un-drafted rookie. Should they perform well during the rookie camp, teams could offer an invite to training camp where spots on the 53-man roster are up for grabs.
Whitley caught 31 passes for 307 yards and 5 TD's in 2017, while Gates racked up 23 solo tackles (35 total) and 5.5 sacks to go along with a blocked kick.
