Cowgirls get much-needed win, HSU men fall to division leader Sul Ross

Hardin-Simmons’ women’s basketball team stayed in the race for a spot in the American Southwest Conference tournament with an 83-55 win over Sul Ross State on Thursday evening at the Mabee Complex.

Heidi Schroeder had 16 points and Taylor Gaffney had 11 points, seven rebounds and five assists.

The loss snapped an eight-game losing streak for the Cowgirls and keep their hopes alive for a spot in the conference tournament. HSU would need a win over Howard Payne or McMurry in the final two conference games and Sul Ross State would need to lose out.

HSU is now 5-17 overall and 3-12 in conference play. Sul Ross State fell to 6-16 overall and 4-10 in league play. The Cowgirls will host Howard Payne on Saturday at 2 p.m.


Hardin-Simmons’ men’s basketball team fell 86-69 to Sul Ross State in American Southwest Conference action on Thursday evening at the Mabee Complex.

The Cowboys came out hot and played one of their best stretches of the season. The Cowboys led 10-2 and pushed the lead out to 20-10 before the Lobos battled back. Sul Ross took its first lead at the 4:45 mark of the first half on a 3-pointer by B.J. Hollis.

Joe Hoeup led the Cowboys with 21 points and Keenan Holdman added 17 points and Caleb Spoon chipped in 12.

The Cowboys are now 8-15 on the year and 6-9 in league play. Sul Ross State improved to 17-5 overall and 12-2 in ASC action. The Cowboys host Howard Payne on Saturday at 4 p.m. and would clinch a berth in the ASC Tournament with a win.
