Cowgirls still searching for first win after doubleheader loss to Belhaven

Hardin-Simmons’ softball team dropped an American Southwest Conference doubleheader to Belhaven on Friday afternoon at Ellis Field, falling 3-1 in the opener before falling 12-2 in the nightcap.

Game 1

Freshman Gabby Ortega kept the Cowgirls in the contest with another solid pitching effort. She took the loss but allowed just three runs on six hits. She is now 0-8 on the year.

Jordan Herring went the distance for the Blazers allowing just one run on five hits. She is now 4-0 on the year.

The Cowgirls took the lead in the fourth inning when Laura Guerrero had an RBI single to left to make it 1-0. The game stayed 1-0 until the top of the sixth when the Blazers struck for three runs. Marlee Blackwell had an RBI double to tie the game, Danielle Darmohray had an RBI groundout and Cassidy Comstock added an RBI single.

Guerrero led the Cowgirls with two hits and Whitney Jemison had two hits for the Blazers.

Game 2

The second game was close with the Cowgirls trailing 4-2. However, Belhaven scored eight times after there were two outs and nobody on in the fifth inning to put the run-rule in effect.

Jordan Shelf allowed four hits and two runs to improve to 5-0 for Belhaven and Lexie Allen allowed four earned runs over five innings to fall to 0-5.

Four different Cowgirls had one hit each and Blackwell, Darmohry, Melissa Rice and Comstock had two hits each for Belhaven.

Belhaven scored a pair of runs in the first inning and added two more in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead. HSU scored a pair of runs in the fourth inning on an Emily Perez RBI single and a sacrifice fly by Shadye Millican.

HSU is now 0-13 on the year and 0-8 in ASC play. Belhaven improved to 10-2 overall and to 5-0 in ASC play. The teams will conclude the series with a single game at noon on Saturday.
