HSU Cowgirls to host opening two rounds in DIII Tournament

Fresh off winning its 16th straight American Southwest Conference championship, the Hardin-Simmons’ women’s soccer team will play the first two rounds of the NCAA Division III Tournament at home this weekend.

The Cowgirls will face Puget Sound (Wash.) on Saturday. Trinity (Tex.) and Occidental (Cali.) square off in the other first round match. The two winners will face off on Sunday for a spot in the Sweet 16.

HSU is 16-1-1 on the year. Puget Sound is 13-5-2 overall and won the Northwest Conference. Trinity is 16-1-1 as well and Occidental comes in with a record of 10-2-5 on the year. Occidental advanced to the NCAA Tournament by winning 6-5 on penalty kicks against Pomona-Pitzer in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship.

Hardin-Simmons and Puget Sound have played four times in the NCAA Tournament with each team advancing twice. The last time they played it was in the second round and UPS won, 1-0, on a late goal in the second overtime.

HSU hosted the first two rounds of last year's tournament as well, defeating Methodist and Trinity on the way to the Final Four.

The Cowgirls lost to Williams in the 2017 semifinals.

Game times for this weekend's opening rounds have not been set.
