HSU, McMurry basketball teams sweep Thursday doubleheaders
Hardin-Simmons’ women’s basketball team brought another win to the Mabee Complex on Thursday night, a 68-64 victory over the Howard Payne Lady Jackets in American Southwest Conference play.
The Cowgirls led for the majority of the game, but the Lady Jackets managed to keep it close until the end. Keilee Burke sank two free throws with under 30 seconds to play to put Hardin-Simmons up four points, and Karlea Ritchie iced the game with a block on Howard Payne’s last shot attempt.
After the teams were tied at 10 after the first quarter, the Cowgirls came out on a 9-2 run to open the second quarter and held a 36-31 lead at halftime.
Howard Payne opened the second half on a 13-5 spurt to open up a 44-41 lead. HSU responded and retook control with a 16-5 run to close the third period.
The Cowgirls had four players scoring in double figures on the night. Taylor Gaffney led the Cowgirls with 17 points, Ritchie added 12 points and Burke and Kaitlyn Ellis both scored 11 points. Burke had 14 rebounds to give her a double-double and added a team-leading three blocks.
Chelsey Harris led the Lady Jackets and the game in points with 25, and Anastasia Willis had 17 points and 14 rebounds.
The Cowgirls move to 11-6 on the year and 5-4 in the ASC. Howard Payne stands at 5-12 and 2-6 in the conference. The Cowgirls will be at home for the next few weeks and will host Sul Ross State in the Mabee Complex Saturday at 1 p.m. The win snapped a nine-game losing streak to Howard Payne.
