ABILENE, Texas — McMurry athletic director Sam Ferguson has joined the staff at ACU, the schools announced on Wednesday.
Ferguson had led McMurry's athletic department since 2014, and will now be ACU's Associate Vice President & Deputy AD for Revenue Generation.
"A decision to leave a family that my wife, Kim, and sons, Angelo and Kaden, have been a part of for nine years is never easy," Ferguson said in a statement.
"Since moving to Abilene nine years ago, I've been impressed with ACU's growth and its economic impact on the city of Abilene. What I am more impressed with is the quality of people I meet from ACU and their amazing support of Wildcat Athletics."
Under Ferguson's leadership, donations to McMurry athletics increased 400% from 2016-2019.
McMurry created a softball program and built an on-campus stadium, and made renovations to its football, swimming, and basketball and volleyball facilities during his tenure.
"Sam's passion for our mission, his more than 10 years as an athletic director and his deep connections in the Abilene community make him the ideal individual to serve in this very important role within our department," ACU athletic director Zack Lassiter said in a statement.
Ferguson added, "There are two truths associated with this professional transition – I am very excited to work for the amazing leaders at ACU, and I will always be grateful for the leaders and people that make up McMurry University."
McMurry's press release did not provide details on the process or timeline for hiring a new athletic director, or if someone will fill-in on an interim basis.
