War Hawks using postseason trip as validation
ABILENE, Texas —
After a turnaround season, the McMurry War Hawk women’s basketball team will be the area’s third program headed to the postseason this week.
The War Hawks will face Southwestern Christian on Thursday in the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) tournament in Kansas.
The 13-11 War Hawks had a season to remember. Not only did they finish above .500 and ride a 5-game win streak that led them to surpassing last year’s win total well-before season’s end, but they also took down some of the top teams in the conference like UMHB – and not to mention the Crosstown rivalry with Hardin-Simmons.
“I mean it's pretty exciting,” said sophomore forward Skyler Reyna. “We never expected to go this far so we're kind of proving a point this year and making a statement.”
And despite not being eligible for American Southwest Conference postseason play as they conclude their transition to DIII, this tournament validates all that they put into this year.
"It's easy to go – let’s just end the season since we've accomplished everything we needed to this year,” said head coach Brittany Densman-Roes. “But this is again and opportunity to let our hard work and everything we put forward this season to pay off."
McMurry and Southwestern Christian tip-off in the Central Region opener at 2 p.m. Thursday in McPherson, KS.
