DCTF Preview: Brownwood in one of state's toughest districts

Sammy Burnett won't have much time to ease into his first season as head coach of his alma mater. During February's realignment, Brownwood was placed in one of the toughest districts in Texas -- with Stephenville, Waco La Vega, China Spring and Gatesville.

Those other four teams combined to go 42-12 last season with La Vega and Stephenville both advancing to the Class 4A Division I semifinals.

District 5-4A Division I will be a dogfight each week, but the Lions do have some weapons of their own. Senior quarterback Tommy Bowden returns as one of the top passers in Class 4A with 2,200 yards, 26 touchdowns and just one interception in 2017.

Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine named Bowden the district's Preseason Offensive MVP, and he will have receivers A.J. McCarty, Braden Jetton and Hayden Tunnel to toss the ball around with.

DCTF predicts Brownwood to finish in fourth place with Stephenville winning district for a second straight year, Waco La Vega in second place and China Spring in third.

Gatesville is projected to miss the playoffs, but don't look down on the Hornets. They return 10 total starters from a team which went 7-4 last season.

La Vega will also welcome in a new head coach as defensive coordinator Don Hyde was promoted to replace Willie Williams, who retired after 28 years as the Pirates' head coach.

Brownwood's difficult schedule starts in the non-district. The opening game is against perennial Class 3A powerhouse Brock at Gordon Wood Stadium.

The Lions will then be on the road for three straight weeks before returning home for a match against longtime rival and former district foe Wylie.
