ABILENE, Texas — While football players dominated the scene on National Signing Day, female athletes were in the spotlight on Wednesday afternoon.
Four Abilene High Lady Eagles signed to play their respective sports in college in a joint ceremony.
Lauren Schaeffer and Hannah Vermillion will remain teammates as the seniors have decided to play tennis at Hardin-Simmons. Allison Pierce pledged to play volleyball for Austin College in Sherman, Texas, and Estefany Hernandez signed to play soccer at ACU.
Schaeffer and Vermillion are both four-year lettermen and last fall they helped AHS win the program's first team tennis district title since 2009.
Pierce, who is the daughter of AHS volleyball head coach Didi Pierce, was a two-year team captain and was a first team All-District 3-6A selection her senior season.
Hernandez was regarded as the Lady Eagles' most consistent performer on the soccer pitch, and was a second-team All-District pick last year.
