Ironman Jose Ortega to lead Roscoe football in 2018

The Roscoe Plowboys began football practice for the 2018 season on Monday, August 6.

The Roscoe Plowboys are once again loaded with experience -- and none more so than key player Jose Ortega.

The receiver and safety enters his senior season as the Plowboys' go-to man. In 2017, Ortega scored 16 total touchdowns (5 rushing, 11 receiving), and accounted for 104 tackles and 5 interceptions on defense.

"Jose is the heart of the team," sixth-year head coach Jake Freeman said during Roscoe's first practice of the season.

"This is his fourth-year to start. He's been all-state the past three years. He's a coaches dream, and kids gravitate towards him. That's a great thing to have on your team."

Last year Roscoe's season ended with a bi-district loss to Farwell. The players believe they underarchived, and are hungry to right that wrong this fall.

"I've been waiting for this the whole year after our game against Farwell last year," said Ortega. "We had to get into the weight room, and we had a great off-season."

The Plowboys return eight starters on both offense and defense, including quarterback Jayden Gonzales.

Roscoe kicks-off the 2018 campaign on Friday, Aug. 31 at Hawley.
