Merkel star Jonah White signs to play football at Baylor
MERKEL, Texas —
Friends, family and the Merkel community traded purple for green for star football player Jonah White's signing ceremony on Wednesday.
White signed his letter of intent to play at Baylor University starting next fall.
"It's a huge step, it's the next step in my life," said White. "I'm happy I got to do it here, and support Merkel. I know they're going to be with me the whole way."
White dazzled Big Country football fans with his highlight plays each week, but his head coach says it was what White did away from the Friday night lights that truly made him an exceptional player.
"One of the most impressive things I remember about Jonah is when he was a freshman and he came out to that high school field the first time," said John Cornelius. "He had all the big hype even then around him.
"He worked as hard or harder than anybody else on the field. He was super coachable, and did everything right. It's nice to see a kid that buys into the whole system make it in such a big way."
Knowing he was not going to play quarterback in college, White was content with moving to the position for his senior year because it was the best option for the Badgers.
He will play running back at Baylor after accounting for 2,600 rushing yards and 34 touchdowns in 2018.
"The [Baylor] coaches came down three times in the past two weeks to come see me. I had a good time with all the players. They were all nice and welcoming," said White.
"The coaches, when we went on the visit, talked to me. I believe in them, and I know they believe in me. I'm thankful I got the opportunity to play for them at the next level."
White added attending Baylor will help him achieve his ultimate goal.
"Be humble, and not only be a better football player but be a better man. I want to be known as a better man than a football player."
